Kaleidoscope Mosaics

Tree and estate in colourful mosaic piecesArt in the Park ran 2 series of mosaic courses as part of Creation's Kaleidoscope project on the Aylesbury Estate. Artist Jane Higginbottom headed the project.

The first group made mosaic paving slabs using patterns and shapes within the buildings of the estate as their starting point for design.  The paving slabs were then installed in the new Aylesbury allotment gardens.

The second group were Aylesbury residents including some allotment holders from the Aylesbury allotments. They worked together to make 8 wall panels which were fixed on both sides of a wall in the garden.

Some were designed around the Aylesbury buildings and some - made by the gardeners - were based on plants and vegetables.

This project brought together a diverse section of the community - a large age range and cultural diversity.

The finished mosaics can be seen by the allotment users, passers by and the surrounding properties that overlook the garden.

For several of the group(s) this was the first education/art project they had attended since leaving school (20 years ago!) and was a big step for them. The project was not only about making mosaics but also about confidence building and building of community.
