EDUCATION AND TRAINING
NEWPORT INFANTS SCHOOL PROJECT
Pond group observing and drawing
From May to October 1999, Andrea Sinclair and Bill Hudson of Art in the
Park worked on an art project with Newport Infants School in Leyton, London
E10. We worked with all of the Year 1 children (5-6 year old), comprising
three classes, to make three separate bronze relief plaques for their
school garden.
Every class had a
half day visit to Art in the Park studios, then a further 2 days working
in the garden.
Each of the three
groups concentrated on a different habitat area of the garden; these being
the logpile, the pond and the tree / meadow area. Each class did intensive
work with their area, observing and discussing the plant and animal life
and the different textures and shapes to be found there. They went on
to do a series of drawings, collage and practice clay work, before making
the final artwork in clay. Bill and Andrea put together all the children's
clay work into one relief artwork for each class. This process was commenced
with the children, so that they had some input into and understanding
of how the final pieces would look.
Over the summer Bill
and Andrea finished off the three clay artworks and prepared moulds for
the foundry where they were cast in bronze. They were sited back in the
school garden in October, with a public opening.
