COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Opening
Doors
Opening Doors project
culminated in an exhibition at Cafe Gallery Projects, Southwark Park involving
residents of Southwarks diverse communities, many of whom are refugees.
The central idea of
the project was hospitality; Opening Doors to new experiences, ideas,
people and places in Southwark using food, comfort, welcoming gestures,
laughter, story-telling, place or space. Somalian, Vietnamese, Latin American,
Greek and Turkish Cypriot groups - as well as born-and-bred Londoners,
took part in workshops. The exhibition took place on the weekend of traditional
St. Georges Day celebrations; Opening Doors offered an alternative experience
of local residents who come from a range of different cultures.
This project was devised
and led by artists Sue Pritchard and Jane Bailey and Senior refugee health
worker Simin Moulsavi. We would like to thank everyone involved included
our funders Arts Council England, SELF, and Neighbourhood Renewal and
the host venue Cafe Gallery Projects.
