Carved Wooden Sculpture

London Wildlife Trust commissioned Art in the Park to create a site-specific sculpture to sit on top of the stump of an old sycamore tree in a once neglected garden.

The sycamore had to be felled to open up the overgrown, disused space to sunlight. Our artist Bill Hudson visited the space for inspiration: using a mixture of organic form reflecting nature - especially seeds - and more angular surfaces to hint at the man-made architecture beyond the garden.

The piece is carved from English oak and areas have been scorched. This adds colour - contrast to the natural oak and also helps to seal and preserve it.

The oil-stain used to treat the wood against weather and time is an organic, environmentally friendly type.

The sculpture towers 13 foot at the heart of the newly-resurrected garden.
